A mother of 3 young children saw me this week as she has been considering abdominoplasty for some time. She spends countless hours in the gym but is frustrated because no matter how hard she works, she still has a lower abdominal bulge and a belly button that pokes out (umbilical hernia).

When I examined her, it was clear she has looked after herself well. She has minimal fat and minimal loose skin. However, the midline gap in her abdominal muscles (what surgeons call rectus divarication) is subs...

When seeing a female patient for the first time, I will explain that my aim is for her to have a fabulous result. I want her to be happy and the most important thing is firstly for me to be clear on what it is she wants. The clearer I become, the more likely I will be confident of providing this for her, or if not, I will find someone who I believe can. I then ask her to describe for me her ‘ideal outcome’.

Most women know precisely what they want though they may not have articulated it. Usually...

A major breakthrough occurred in my practice this week. For the first time I performed an Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) complete with liposuction to the upper abdomen and hips, and my female patient went home a few hours after the operation. In other words, a tummy tuck was performed as a day procedure.

I have been performing tummy tucks since I commenced practice more than 27 years ago. Commonly my patients have been staying in hospital 2-3 days before going home. American Plastic Surgical colleag...

There is a commonly held myth, particularly among men, that women want to have cosmetic surgery so they will be more attractive to men. Whilst this may be a side benefit for some women, rarely is it the main reason for women choosing to enhance, correct or rejuvenate their body.

For 27 years now, I have heard women consistently say, “I want to be able to buy and wear the clothes that I want!”

When women wear clothes they know fit well, when they fill them out and they KNOW they look good, they fee...

This week, I received the following SMS from a patient.

“I have been a runner since I was 2 years old – but gave up at age 15 due to being bullied for by big boobs. They would bounce so much when I ran. As an adult – they hurt to run when they were bigger again from having babies….and my muscle separation also gave me challenges with running. But now – thanks to you – I am running my first ever half marathon in less than 4 weeks! I ran 17 kms on Sunday and damn it felt good!!! THANK YOU!!”

I had p...

In June, I was invited to attend the Mentor Masters conference in Sydney. The moderator of this event is Dr Michael Miroshnik, an outstanding young Plastic Surgeon in Sydney. He shared his expertise using his dual-plane technique and textured, tear-dropped shaped breast implants to provide a natural result.

Dr Michael Miroshnik referring to some of the finer points of the female breast.

It was great to catch up with my colleague and friend Dr David Caminer whilst at this conference. David and I h...

Every 2 years, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) hosts a conference which just happens to be on a cruise ship. The conference is held when the ship is at sea and when docked the time is our own. This year, we left from Southampton, travelled north through Scotland and across the North Sea to the magnificent Fjords of Norway. It was a fabulous way to keep up to date with the cutting edge of Aesthetic Surgery whilst enjoying some breathtaking scenery with my wife Kim and 3...

There has been some recent media coverage of a condition (with a long medical word) related to breast implants and I would like to reassure all my current and future patients.

Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that is said to be related to the use of textured breast implants. Although it is rare, it is something I discuss with every patient considering breast implantation. The link between implants and ALCL has only been discovered in recent times and...

Recently I was speaking with a mother, 8 months after her mummy makeover (breast reduction/lift and tummy tuck). She was so happy. She told me she was loving her increase in confidence, wearing her dream bikini and because she was able to do sit ups, her shape was continuing to improve.

This is so gratifying to hear because as always, I love making a difference in a person’s life.

However, she then said something very curious. “I have lost some friends as a result of this operation!”

I was shocked.

This week, I was reviewing a mother with 3 children who 6 months previously had undergone a breast augmentation along with a breast lift (an Augmentation/Mastopexy). When I asked her, what this had meant to her, she began to open up.

“I love me more,” she said. “I’ve always been a confident person, but previously it was more of a front. I am now more confident and I feel it deep down.”

She went on, “Previously, I was embarrassed about my body. Now I am proud of it and the things I am achieving. I...
